Beatrice Vorster and Yasmin Vardi have worked together since 2020, primarily focusing on moving-image.

Our practice centres on decoding cinematic archetypes, particularly of horror cinema, often parodying structural and narrative conventions of specific subgenres in the horror canon. We are motivated by understanding cinema as a construction of our realities and identities. We believe this understanding is key to examining our current political moment which is both determined by - and saturated in - audiovisual media.

The feminine position is central to our process of encoding and decoding. Throughout our body of work, we examine mechanisms of tension through humour, vulnerability and cliches. Considering the subgenre as a direct pipeline of social anxiety, our practice is one of distillation: the cross-section of power and desire. It examines the power of suggestion, reaching towards what is hidden through techniques of absenting and remaking. The relationship between sound and image lies at the core of this onscreen/offscreen tension.

BAD APPLES

2024 single channel video, 7 mins

BAD APPLES deploys the iconography of the ‘apple’ as an actor caught in the cross-section of power and desire. It examines the rationalisation of the ‘bad apple’ which removes institutional responsibility while subtle gestures negotiate the technologies of power and subordination.

a woman runs away from something

2024 single channel video, 21 mins

A woman runs away from something takes the skeleton of the home invasion subgenre and reimagines it through techniques of absenting. By removing the narrative and distilling the form to pure format, the film investigates the database mode of horror subgenre by instead highlighting the grammar of cinema.

Starring Fergus Robinson, Elli Antoniou and Amelie Mckee.

bootleg vampire

2023 single channel video, 15 mins

The onscreen vampire is a dataset; a composite formed through the production-line output of thousands of adaptations which spans audiovisual culture. Duplication is written into the fabric of the vampire as a figure of the undead - grave robbing is part of the narrative, accelerating the expansion of this hoard into online spaces.

SWEAT!

2023 single channel video, 19 mins

Sweatshop departs from the process of perspiration (sweat) -  an internal process that manifests stress, modifying temperature, as well as an intimate manifestation of effort and pleasure. The work deals with information trade and body and emotions as commerce highlighting the intricate enmeshment of technology with bodies, exploitation, violence and labor. The video uses actuarial tables,  a discipline that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in insurance, finance, and other industries and professions.
